Fly High
I collaborated with Alexander Chiriboga on a trio that he wrote for alto saxophone, trumpet, and trombone. Here is what he has to say about his piece:
Fly High describes the beauty of flight that I discovered with my dad. As a young boy my dad would take me to airshows and one of my most cherished memories was flying in a vintage biplane with him. This piece attempts to capture the memory of my first flight.
Divided into four sections, the work begins with a bright fanfare in 7/8 that captures the thrill and joy of taking off. It then moves to embody a light and bouncy mood with a 4/4 + 7/8 feel, as it guides us through the clouds. The freedom of flying is then expressed through improvised lines of the players. A slow ballad then captures the beauty of flight and the breathtaking views I’ve experienced from the sky. As we near the end of our journey, a virtuosic run and accented brass captures the thrilling ride as we descend and approach the runway. Lastly, the final fanfare returns as we touch down on the runway bringing the piece to a close.
